OpenAI’s popular language model, ChatGPT, has ventured into the world of humor. Two researchers from the Institute for Software Technology at German Aerospace Center and Technical University Darmstadt asked ChatGPT to deliver jokes and discovered that, while it made a few funny dad jokes, over 90% of the time, the responses were from a recycled list of only 25 jokes. The researchers acknowledged that ChatGPT could step toward machines’ humor, but its responses still lacked originality. It flagged computational humor as difficult. The researchers concluded that ChatGPT had a long way to go in generating intentionally funny original content. Bing, using ChatGPT-4, showed self-aware humor and cracked a joke about itself.
