Content Writer Turned AC Repairman After Losing Job to ChatGPT

Date:

A survey conducted in February has found that nearly half of US companies currently using chatbot ChatGPT have already replaced workers with the AI-powered technology. This comes as former content writer Eric Fein lost his business to ChatGPT, forcing him to repair air conditioners to make ends meet.

Fein had spent a decade writing content for various clients and earning $60 per hour. However, as clients began transitioning to ChatGPT, they cut ties with him, leading to financial struggles for his family. Despite requesting clients to reconsider due to ChatGPT’s inability to match his creativity and precision, they preferred the cheaper option.

Fein’s experience is not unique, as Resumebuilder.com surveyed 1,000 US business leaders in the US who either use or plan to use ChatGPT, and found that nearly half have already begun using it. Half of the leaders claimed it had already replaced workers, as companies look to streamline job responsibilities.

While the new technology brings excitement, Resumebuilder.com’s chief career advisor, Stacie Haller, warns workers to consider how it may affect their current job responsibilities. Fein, for example, has transitioned to a trade, as it’s more future-proof, including AC and plumbing repairs.

As AI advances, its impact on employment will continue to grow. While companies may prioritize cost-efficiency, it’s important to consider the human toll and the need for re-skilling and training programs to support those who are displaced.
