Elon Musk Launches Rival to Microsoft-Backed ChatGPT

Date:

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Monday that he plans to launch a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) platform called “TruthGPT” to compete with products from technology giants Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Google (GOOGL.O). During an interview with Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson, Musk voiced his concerns about Microsoft-backed OpenAI — the company behind the popular chatbot sensation ChatGPT — for allegedly “training the AI to lie”. Elon further elaborated that OpenAI has become a “closed source” and “for-profit” organization, now closely aligned with Microsoft.

In order to create an AI platform maximized for truth-seeking, Musk proposed starting “TruthGPT” to potentially “annihilate humans”. He is currently poaching AI researchers from Alphabet Inc.’s Google to build a company rivaling OpenAI, according to sources aware of the situation. In addition, it was reported that he recently formed and registered a firm in Nevada called X.AI Corp, which lists Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of his family office, as a secretary.

Musk himself is an advocate of regulation in the tech industry with AI, due to its potentially hazardous capabilities. In an interview with the former US President Barack Obama, he urged the Washington administration to “encourage AI regulation”. On Twitter, Musk said he valued Twitter company “less than half” of its acquisition price.

Microsoft recently invested multibillions into OpenAI, intensifying the competition with Google and kicking off a race to secure AI funding in Silicon Valley. Elon Musk’s venture is a promising addition to the growing culture of innovative development in the tech industry and could eventually provide a fresh and more secure outlook on AI systems.
