Sam Altman: OpenAI-Microsoft Competition ‘Hopeless’

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has warned that competing with the company in creating foundational AI models is totally hopeless, given its resources and expertise. According to Altman, OpenAI’s $13 billion investment from Microsoft and its experience give it a significant advantage in the development of complex models. Despite this, Altman told attendees at a recent industry event that failed competition shouldn’t discourage startups from innovating, as breakthroughs are still possible. Altman went on to suggest that future AI systems, such as GPT-10, could be powerful tools for curing diseases, fighting climate change and improving education. However, he also warned that exponential advancements in AI pose an increasing risk in the long term.
