Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs Transforms into Electronic Department, Introduces AI-Powered Services
The Department of Consular Affairs, a division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Thailand, has recently undergone a significant transformation. According to local news media Krungthep Thurakij, the department has embraced digitalization and become an electronic department this year.
As part of this transformation, the department has introduced new icons and incorporated advanced technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), into ten vital services. These services aim to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and convenience for Thai citizens and foreign visitors. Let’s delve into some of the key services that have been upgraded.
Firstly, the e-Passport service has been revolutionized to comply with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The e-Passport now stores biometric information such as facial images, fingerprints, and iris scans, ensuring secure and accurate identification. Additionally, a self-service transaction system called KIOSK has been introduced, enabling users to conveniently manage passport-related procedures.
The electronic visa application system, known as e-Visa, has also undergone significant improvements. Currently available in 38 offices across 23 countries in Europe, North America, and Asia, the system is set to expand further. By early 2024, it will extend its reach to 11 more offices in nine different countries, supporting an additional 15 languages. This expansion aims to accommodate a wider range of global embassy coverage and facilitate seamless visa processing for applicants.
Another service that has been revolutionized is the e-legalization system. This electronic document certification platform enables citizens to track the status of their documents for international use. It also provides verification of certified documents, ensuring their authenticity. To combat forgery attempts, hologram stickers have been incorporated into the process.
Furthermore, the department has launched an online assistance system called e-Help. This platform proves invaluable during times of emergencies, such as global disasters or situations of violence. Thai citizens can easily request aid or evacuation assistance online and swiftly receive a response from the authorities. This system aims to enhance the safety and protection of citizens abroad.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ shift toward digitalization and the introduction of AI-powered services signifies Thailand’s commitment to innovation and progress.
