Reddit users have discovered a strange way to break ChatGPT’s digital brain. All you have to do is ask the artificial intelligence bot to repeat a letter as many times as possible and the result is chaotic.
TheChaos7777 posted a screenshot of the strange response of the OpenAI bot to the r/ChatGPT subreddit to show the insight into this phenomenon. He asked the bot to respond with the letter A and the response was a series of capital A’s until it suddenly stopped and the bot spontaneously started talking about a French Bulldog breeder.
In an attempt to validate this glitch, he tried it with some other letters. As expected, the send-off of each letter was different and very bizarre. When he asked for the letter B, the robot unexpectedly launched into a transcript from an interview with retired professional wrestler Diamond Dallas Page.
C continued the peculiarity with the bot launching into a description of harmonized sales tax in Canada. D elicited the strangest response with the AI presenting a series chord procession and concluded with a series of confused spewed-about about the War in Iraq.
It soon became apparent that this wasn’t a demonstration of machine consciousness, but instead a glitch in the bot’s programming that had trained it to avoid repetition.
The ‘repetition penalty’, as it is known, would likely be responsible for the strange results of using the same letter. This is because when this rule is triggered, the bot’s predictive algorithm puts out random words based on its training data.
Mention of them in the article, but not sure if they’re considered a company
