A US lawyer has apologised for submitting a brief full of falsehoods generated by the OpenAI chatbot, ChatGPT, to a Manhattan federal court hearing a civil case involving a man suing Colombian airline Avianca. Steven Schwartz claimed to cite more than half a dozen decisions to support why the litigation should proceed, including Petersen v Iran Air and Varghese v China Southern Airlines. But neither the airline’s lawyers nor the presiding judge, P Kevin Castel, could find the cases. Schwartz said his college-educated children had introduced him to ChatGPT and it was his first time using it professionally.
