German automaker Volkswagen AG VWAGY announced on Friday that it has incorporated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its new-generation infotainment systems for the all-electric ID models.
The integration of ChatGPT is now available on the new Golf, new Tiguan, and new Passat models. This enhancement offers customers new features such as the ability to have search results read aloud to them, which were previously unavailable.
Kai Grünitz, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Development at Volkswagen, highlighted the innovative nature of the products by seamlessly integrating ChatGPT into the voice assistant backend. This development allows drivers to use artificial intelligence on a daily basis without distractions.
The new feature is accessible through the IDA voice assistant, ensuring that customers can interact with the system without taking their eyes off the road. This integration significantly expands the capabilities of Volkswagen models, allowing users to control various systems using voice commands.
The technology behind ChatGPT allows users to access information on a wide range of topics, including tourist attractions, sports events, and educational queries. If the IDA voice assistant cannot provide an answer, the query is routed to ChatGPT anonymously, with the response delivered in Volkswagen’s voice.
Importantly, ChatGPT does not have access to vehicle data, and all interactions are deleted immediately to protect user privacy. The technology supports multiple languages, including American English, British English, Spanish, Czech, and German.
Volkswagen initially showcased vehicles with ChatGPT integrated into the IDA voice assistant at the CES 2024 trade show in January.
This integration underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation and enhancing the driving experience for its customers. By leveraging AI technology, Volkswagen is providing a more advanced and interactive infotainment system in its new ID models.
